Summer Math Camp Lead Counselor (Temporary, Part-Time)

The Roanoke Higher Education Center is seeking an enthusiastic and responsible Lead Camp Counselor for its 4-week Summer Math Camp serving rising 3rd graders. The ideal candidate will be passionate about working with children, highly organized, and able to create a safe, fun, and structured environment for campers throughout the full day.

Position Details:

  • Type: Temporary, part-time
  • Location: Roanoke Higher Education Center
  • Dates: July 7th – July 31st, 2025
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Pay: $25.00/hour (training time is also paid)
  • Training: Paid, mandatory training in June

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise day-to-day camp operations, including enrichment activities, lunch, outdoor play, and transitions between activities
  • Ensure the physical, emotional, and social well-being of all campers
  • Provide leadership and guidance to assistant counselors and other staff
  • Serve as the primary contact for behavioral support and camper issues
  • Coordinate daily logistics such as attendance, transitions, and camper pick-up/drop-off
  • Communicate effectively with families and staff, including sending daily or weekly updates
  • Support Lead Instructor and educational staff as needed during academic blocks
  • Ensure compliance with safety guidelines and procedures at all times
  • Help plan and implement fun and educational afternoon programming (STEM, arts, nature, games)
  • Maintain a positive, inclusive, and supportive camp environment
  • Attend all required pre-camp training and staff meetings

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children in a school, camp, or youth program setting
  • Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage a team, multitask, and respond to changing needs quickly
  • Demonstrated ability to create a safe and positive environment for children
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain before camp)
  • Reliable, punctual, and enthusiastic
  • Degree or current enrollment in education, child development, recreation, or a related field preferred

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be available for all four weeks of camp and required training sessions in June
  • Background check required
