About the Program

The Master of Education with a concentration in Special Education also provides the opportunity to acquire:

An endorsement in Special Education General Curriculum  K-12,

OR

Add-on an endorsement in Special Education General Curriculum for Elementary Ed (must be endorsed in VA PK-6 Elementary Education,

OR

Add-on SPED General Curriculum for Middle School (must hold an active Middle School Education Core Content endorsement,

OR

Add-on Special Education General Curriculum for Secondary Ed (must hold a Virginia Secondary Core Content endorsement.

 

All classes are online with the exception of student teaching/Practicum. If you are presently teaching and have students with IEPs in your classroom, you will most likely be able to student teach in your own classroom.

Courses & Requirements

34 Credit Hours | Course Checklist

If you select the Special Education General Curriculum K-12 option, the Virginia Department of Education requires the following courses and the RVE  must be completed prior to student teaching: verification that the following courses were completed during initial licensure (if any are missing, they will need to be taken): Characteristics of Exceptionality, Classroom & Behavior Management, Lifespan Human Development, Assessment of and for Learning, Foundations of Education, Language Acquisition & Literacy, Content Area Reading, English Composition (a student may request substitutions for IN 627, ED631, and/or IN 629 if needed to make space for other needed education coursework on this list). That is, if you do not have these courses, you make take up to 3 of these in lieu of courses listed above that are on the Special Education checklist.

Cost & Financial Aid

Program is offered as a Cohort with the reduced price of $325 per semester hour. Must be a Virginia licensed teacher endorsed in another area (not CTE) or do the Master’s Degree without licensure to participate in the Cohort.

Programs are also available outside the Cohort at the graduate level rate of $495 per credit hour.
