Directions to the Center:
The Roanoke Higher Education Center (RHEC) is housed in the renovated Norfolk & Western Railroad building at 108 North Jefferson Street, next to the Hotel Roanoke.

From 581 heading South, take Exit 5. Turn right onto Wells Ave. Proceed past the Hotel Roanoke. Cross Jefferson St. Take next left into Jordan Alley to Parking Lot 1 (see numbered circle on map above).

From 220/581 heading North, take Exit 4E, immediately turn right onto Williamson Road. Proceed south to Wells Ave., and turn right onto Wells. Cross Jefferson St. Take next left into Jordon Alley to Parking Lot 1 (see numbered circle on map above).

Where to Park:
Parking is available as follows: (See numbered circles on map)

Day - Monday through Friday Permit or parking fee required 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

1  West side of RHEC (surface parking lot)

2  Lot on First Street (Between Loudon Ave. and Wells Ave.) Free for students with a RHEC issued permit

3  Parking Garage (use entrance on Centre Ave., across from RHEC parking lot)

4  Lot on Centre Avenue (Between Shenandoah Ave. and First St.) Free for students with a RHEC issued permit

Daily and Event Parking (Monday through Friday - 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.): Daily parking fees for lot 1 and garage 3 are $1.00 per hour or $5.00 per day. Fees for lot 1 are collected via a regularly monitored self-payment box that is located on the median strip that separates lot 1 and Jordon Alley. Fees for garage 3 are collected by an attendant at the garage entrance/exit booth. All parking fees are collected by the City of Roanoke. (Note: There is a change machine located just inside of the RHEC main entrance by the café door.) The Roanoke Higher Education Center does not provide parking receipts. When planning a day event and making a reservation, please contact us at least 48 hours in advance at (540) 767-6013 if parking validations may be necessary.

Evening - Monday through Friday The parking rate from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in lot 1 and garage 3 is $2.00. Saturday - Free parking all day in all lots.


Monthly Parking:
Monthly parking permits are available for lot 1 and garage 3 during the day.
Parking permits may be purchased from City of Roanoke Parking at the Market Square Parking Garage (Phone: 540-343-0585) located at 15 East Campbell Ave. Parking is on a space available basis. Prices

  • Roanoke City-Managed Lot and Gainsboro Garage:  $.50 per half hour for a maximum of $5 per day, Monday-Friday.
  • Roanoke City-Managed Lot and Gainsboro Garage:  $2 flat rate if parking after 4pm Monday-Friday.  An attendant will be at the booth until 10pm.
  • Students with college-issued identification card, combined with a city-issued $1 coupon will receive a $1 discount on the evening flat rate.
  • Roanoke City-Managed Lot and Gainsboro Garage: Free on weekends
  • Roanoke Higher Education Center lots 2 and 4 are still free, but MUST have the proper student parking pass prominently displayed in the front window of the vehicle
  • If a person parks early in the day, pays the $5 maximum parking rate and stays past 4pm, that individual does NOT pay the additional $2 (unless they leave the lot and return after 4pm)

Downtown Express:

A FREE city bus (marked Shuttle) will run to and from the Roanoke Higher Education Center - stopping near the corner of Jefferson St. and Centre Ave. - every 10 minutes during the day between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. five days per week. Street signs marked DOWNTOWN EXPRESS indicate shuttle stops along the designated routes.

Parking on the Street:
Students and staff may park on City streets in designated areas for designated time periods. Read the parking related signs carefully; parking regulations are strictly enforced. Students, faculty, and staff are requested not to park in residential areas near the Center.

Parking Safety:
Parking garages and lots are well-lighted and patrolled frequently. As always, for your personal safety, exercise caution going to and from your vehicle. Walking between parking areas and the Center in groups is always recommended.

Assistance for Persons with Handicaps/Disabilities:
The entrance for persons with handicaps/disabilities is located in front of the West Entrance (Main Entrance) on Jordan Alley. There are designated handicap/disability parking spaces in the parking lot adjacent to the entrance. Both Valley Metro and Radar provide public transportation for those who require assistance.

Winter Considerations:
During the winter, storms may cause the cancellation of activities at the RHEC. Please check your local broadcasting station for cancellation notices.

Please use caution going to and from your vehicle when snow or ice is present.
