Facilities Assistant (Temporary Part-Time)

The Roanoke Higher Education Center has a temporary part-time position available for an individual interested in working in our Facilities Services Department. Duties include: set up & tear down of daily events, light cleaning, and maintaining an organized storage area.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Custodial experience preferred

Successful applicant will generally work 3 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and must be available to work on Saturday as needed. Total number of hours will not exceed 29 per week.

Rate of pay: $15 per hour.

Painter (Temporary Part-Time)

The Roanoke Higher Education Center has a temporary part-time position available for an individual interested in painting throughout the facility. Duties include: setting up a paint schedule, painting classrooms, offices, and public areas, and maintaining an organized work area.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of various types of paints
  • Three years of commercial painting experience

Successful applicant must be able to work flexible hours, including some Saturdays. Total number of hours will not exceed 29 hours per week.

Rate of pay: $18-21 per hour.

Math Tutors

Do you like math? Do you have experience tutoring advanced math classes? Do you like working with adults? RHEC might be the place for you! We are seeking to hire experienced math tutors who are skilled at working with adult learners in individual and group settings for both in-person and online tutoring services.

RHEC houses over 200 degree/certification programs offered by member institutions with a diverse student population. Since each program has specific course offerings, we are looking for math tutors who are confident in a range of math skills including basic math concepts, algebra, accounting, and statistics.

Tutor Job Responsibilities/Qualifications

  • Ability to help students develop organizational methods and practices
  • Work with students to focus on individual study skills
  • Craft customized learning program based on student needs
  • Ability to teach students how to learn 1:1 and on a group basis
  • Ability to help students improve math study habits and note-taking
  • Ability to assist with homework and test preparation
  • Ability to positively supervise students
  • Must be able to attend required meetings and training sessions at RHEC

Required Qualifications:

  • Experienced math tutor, preferably with adult students
  • Be professional, a collaborator, flexible, honest, and patient with students
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Must be proficient in Google applications and web tools related to tutoring
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Self-starter with good time management skills is necessary

Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements

  • At least 18 credit hours of college-level math training. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • At least 10 hours of tutoring experience and training
  • Certification with an appropriate national tutoring association preferred

This is a 1099 independent contractor position with flexible hours dependent on student class schedules. Work may be performed at the Roanoke Higher Education Center in space provided.

Reading/Writing Specialist Tutors

RHEC is seeking to hire multiple tutors who are skilled at working with adult learners both individually and in group settings. The Education Center houses over 200 degree/certification programs offered by member institutions with a diverse student population. We are looking for dynamic individuals who want to share their passion and skills in general reading and writing methods including reading comprehension, paragraph development, essay topics, and business-related writing.  We are seeking tutors with skill levels ranging from high school through college-level reading/writing abilities who are comfortable providing tutoring services for both in-person and online students.

Job Responsibilities

  • Ability to teach key writing processes and strategies
  • Work with students to focus on individual needs
  • Craft customized learning program based on student needs
  • proficient in grammar and English language
  • Proficient in essay writing and proofreading
  • Ability to teach students how to learn in both in-person and online settings
  • Must be able to attend required meetings and training sessions at RHEC

Required Qualifications:

  • Experienced tutor, preferably with adult students
  • Confidence and emotional maturity and stability
  • Be professional, a collaborator, flexible, honest, and patient with students
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Must be proficient in Google applications and web tools related to tutoring
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision

Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline required
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Recent teaching or tutoring experience (at least 10 hours) required
  • Possession of a current Virginia teaching license or a license that has expired within the last 2 years, OR be certified by a national tutoring and/or reading association
