About the Program

A university education is about learning to ask and answer complex questions. The JMU Adult Degree Program (ADP) allows highly motivated and self-directed students to pursue the questions about which they are most passionate. ADP students epitomize the intentional intellectual engagement at the core of a great liberal education: focused, rigorous, disciplinary learning, even when integrating multiple disciplines.

ADP is not a means to vocational or applied versions of existing degrees; nor does it provide a secondary alternative to (or a “light” version of) existing majors. It is, instead, a place for students 22 and older to complete their bachelor’s degree. It is a place for intellectually curious, reflective, and self-directed students who embrace learning for its own sake. This program is not a place to just “get a degree;” this is a place to pursue deep learning.

Career Paths

Because this is an individualized studies program, students’ career experiences, interests and future goals vary widely.

Courses & Requirements

120 Credit Hours

Because this is an individualized studies program, students will design their own degree plan in partnership with ADP staff and their academic adviser.

The Adult Degree Program (ADP) gives you the flexibility to create your own degree based on your skills, interests, and future career and educational goals. You work with ADP staff, academic advisers, and other JMU faculty to develop an educational program plan that incorporates JMU’s general education requirements into your chosen curriculum and develop a program of study that is unique to you.

As Individualized Study majors, ADP students develop their program plan concentration by choosing classes from two or more subject areas.  These classes represent the body of knowledge our students want to enhance their current knowledge, skills and abilities to advance or change careers.
