About the Program

The math education content area studies concentration is a 36-hour fully online program designed for:

  • Licensed secondary mathematics teachers
  • Students with an undergraduate degree in a mathematics education licensure program
  • Prospective college/university mathematics instructors

Our program is designed to meet the needs of secondary mathematics teachers throughout Virginia. The program is unique in its scope and nature. We are the largest graduate-level program for secondary mathematics teachers in the state of Virginia. We enroll an average of 20 Virginia mathematics teachers per year, with an approximate retention rate of 84% and a graduation rate of 82%.

Courses & Requirements

36 credit hours | Course Checklist

The program consist of 18 hours of mathematics content designed to develop teachers’ deep conceptual understanding of mathematics, knowledge of mathematics applications in STEM fields, as well as the opportunity to create and use modeling and simulations to describe real-world situations. An additional 18 hours of education coursework focuses on enhancing teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge. Participants learn strategies that are effective in meeting the needs of diverse learners, improving student outcomes, and lowering achievement gaps. In addition, teachers are given opportunities to utilize cutting edge educational technologies that are appropriate for secondary mathematics classrooms.
