Summer Math Camp Assistant Instructor/Counselor (Temporary, Part-Time)
The Roanoke Higher Education Center is looking for enthusiastic, responsible, and creative assistant instructors/counselors for a 4-week Summer Math Camp designed for rising 3rd graders. This temporary, part-time position is perfect for high school students or individuals with a passion for math and helping others learn. As an assistant, you will help campers with math lessons and participate in fun and engaging activities to make learning enjoyable.
Position Details:
- Type: Temporary, part-time
- Location: Roanoke Higher Education Center
- Dates: July 7th – July 21st, 2025
- Schedule: Mornings (8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.) or Afternoons (12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.), Monday – Friday
- Pay: $16.00/hour
- Training: Paid, mandatory training in June
You will assist in math instruction, support campers in small groups, and help lead a variety of fun activities, including games, STEM, arts, and outdoor games. You will also help with behavior management and ensure a safe, supportive environment for all campers.
Responsibilities include:
- Helping the lead instructor with daily math lessons and acitivities
- Assisting with small group rotations and math games
- Leading or assisting with enrichment activities such as STEM, art, and outdoor games
- Monitoring student progress and ensuring their safety
- Collaborating with other camp staff to create a positive camp experience
What we’re looking for:
- Enthusiasm and a positive attitude
- Basic math knowledge (comfort with elementary math is a plus)
- Good communication skills and ability to work with young students
- Organized and able to help lead students through daily activities
- Willingness to learn and work as part of a team
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain before camp)
Preferred qualifications:
- No formal qualifications required; experience in math or teaching is a plus
- Experience in informal education settings, babysitting, or volunteering with children is helpful
- Summer camp experience of first aid certification is a plus but not required
Additional requirements:
- Must be available for all four weeks of camp
- Must pass a background check
